Intelligent Movement Somatics online classes & Private Consultations in Lincoln
Hello, my name is Liz and welcome to Intelligent Movement Lincoln. I teach Somatics which is a movement method of re-educating the brain’s control over chronically tight muscles.
A simple and effective way to improve posture, increase ease in everyday movement and reduce tension, tightness and pain.
If this sounds like something you’d like help with or just want to feel more relaxed and at ease in your own skin then this is for you!
My online classes, online private appointments and inperson clinical sessions are all about simplicity and not surprisingly following your body’s inner wisdom.
So, What exactly is somatics all about?
Somatics is neuromuscular retraining. It is a simple movement method that targets tense and chronically tight muscles, who doesn’t have those?
It is suitable for all abilities, especially those with limited range of movement (if you’ve tried Physio, strength or stability classes, Yoga or Pilates and they didn’t feel right for you), Somatics is a great place to begin. It’s not just an exercise class though, this mindful practice also de-stresses your nervous system which leaves you feeling deeply relaxed, calmer and with your energy restored.
Tense muscles can lead to chronically tight muscles, which is where our troubles begin. This leads to pain, poor posture and reduced range of movement . This develops into what we call “Sensory Motor Amnesia” (SMA) the term coined by Somatics creator Thomas Hanna. (he developed Somatics in the ‘70’s, and FYI, it’s also known as Hanna Somatics Education). SMA is where muscles and movements have become chronically tight, restricted and painful and where the part of your brain that controls your movement and muscles, the Sensory Motor Cortex, has lost either full or partial control over them. Your limbs and movements may feel heavy, sore, achey and you may think (or have been told) you have weakness or arthritis.
Some Examples of how SMA shows up:-
Hip Pain
Back Pain
Sciatica
Rotator Cuff
RSI
TMJ
Chronic Tension in Neck and Shoulders
Hip and Knee Pain/Stiffness
Scoliosis
If you have tight muscles that are distracting you, interrupting your sleep and are even painful, you might have tried everything to release them, stretching, massaging, or hands on treatments, sound familiar? You’re stuck in a cycle of massage or appointments, even buying massage and heat devices to help alleviate your discomfort . In Somatics you learn how to effectively release this tension for yourself. I’ve been practising this since 2016 and have not required treatment from anywhere else (I used to see a Chiropractor regularly).
In Somatics we teach you how you to release your tight, tense muscles by re-edcuating that part of your brain to regain control, reduce pain, restore movement and posture. We do this through a technique called “Pandiculation”.
“I enjoyed your class and I have to say that, for the first time in years, you gave me hope with regard to my mobility after years and years of pain and seizing up. I was very emotional at the end of the session. The last class I attended was a physiotherapy class and it had me laid up for 3 weeks after. The orthopedic consultant I was under at the time was incensed with the clinic and told me not to go again.
Anyway, I want to thank you for the gift of the Somatics class last week and am very keen to continue”
“I was amazed at the positive regeneration my body experienced after attending locally, Liz’s Somatics sessions only a couple of times.I was due a medical consultation for lower back surgery and a potential hip replacement after months of discomfort and pain. Both these procedures were cancelled after all my problematic symptoms disappeared after attending Liz’s sessions and continuing Somatic practices at home throughout the week. As a very active sportsman used to dynamic and aggressive sports, I have been stunned that such a passive pursuit can have such monumental benefits to both my health and well being…”
