"I have learnt so much about myself, not just physically but mentally and emotionally and far more about mindful movement, than I ever did with yoga”.

Liz Underwood

You know when you have those days when you feel a bit out of sorts? Not unwell, just not right, a bit discombobulated? I’d been feeling like that over the last few days and after a morning of teaching my Foundations course at Central Wellness, I was tempted to go to bed for an extra, extra early night, instead I got on the floor and spent some quiet time with myself, just me, my mat and I! (well, actually my heated blanket and I - what a marvel it is☺️).

I’ve been planning and prepping the classes for this week, both my own classes and for Essential Somatics' Daily Practice Week which is open to those who have experienced Somatics before with a view to feeling the benefits of a regular daily practice.

The class that I taught this morning was what I explored for myself last night. Nothing new, nothing with bells on, just simple, slow and explorative and I literally felt more me again, the thing I could not quite put my finger on had shifted.

Teaching classes for as many years as I have has it’s advantages, the wonderful community of students I have and also its challenges in keeping my classes fresh and creative. In reality, every class is unique and different because we are different every time we get on the floor and every class is unique and different even though and often the basics are repeated. These basics are our baseline, a comfort and reference point for feeling something new, like finding that key to a locked door that’s always been in your home which leads you down a new path but always back to yourself. That is the beauty of a daily practice.

This week Ali, a yoga teacher for many years shares her experience of joining my weekly online classes.

When Yoga Met Hanna Somatics -

As a lifelong yoga devotee, and a qualified yoga teacher with twenty years of teaching experience, which served me well until I began dealing with years of back pain. Unbeknown to me, I had a condition which I had developed at an early age.

This is where I first became interested in Hanna Somatics. To be able to notice and sense habitual holding patterns and have movements and practices to address these issues has been nothing short of a revelation.

Having attended somatic courses and workshops I was looking for

something more regular. In 2021 I began searching online and was

immediately drawn to Liz’s ‘Intelligent Movement’ website. My senses

told me everything I now know about Liz – she is a thoughtful,

inspirational and talented teacher, who really knows her stuff, and she

puts her heart and soul into her classes. So that was it, I signed up for

the membership and I couldn’t imagine life without Liz’s classes. The

option to attend the online classes, and access the extensive library, is a huge bonus, especially as I live in North Yorkshire. I have learnt so much about myself, not just physically but mentally and emotionally, and far more about mindful movement, than I ever did with yoga.
