About Clinical Somatic Education

  • Clinical Somatic Education was created by Thomas Hanna. It’s a neuroscience-based method that helps you retrain your brain to release chronic muscle tension and improve movement patterns.

  • Unlike traditional exercise, Clinical Somatic Education focuses on re-educating the brain’s control over muscles, rather than forcing flexibility or strength.

  • This practice is beneficial for all kinds of issues, including (but not limited to):

    • Back, neck, and shoulder pain

    • Poor posture

    • Sciatica and joint discomfort

    • Chronic tension and stress

Somatic work is a process that takes time—your nervous system and movement patterns don’t change overnight. The 3-month period gives you enough time to learn the method, begin to integrate it into your body, and start experiencing meaningful, sustainable results.

Results & Expectations

  • This work is a practice, not a quick fix. It takes time for your nervous system and movement patterns to relearn and reorganise.

The pain or tension you’re experiencing likely didn’t develop overnight, so it also takes time to soften and change.

That said, many people notice a shift after their very first class or private session. It might feel like ease, space, or simply a sense that something is different. That initial change is often the spark of hope—that things can feel better—which helps people stay committed to the process.

With regular practice, these small shifts build over time into lasting improvements in how you move, feel, and inhabit your body.

  • Somatics can significantly reduce pain and improve movement, but results are not guaranteed and depend on individual factors.

Safety & Suitability

  • Clinical Somatic Education is gentle, but if you have a medical condition, you should consult your healthcare provider before starting.

  • No—somatic movement is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

  • Yes, many people use somatic movement during recovery, but it’s best to check with your doctor first.
