This week, I’m feeling very, very sad. Last week, I learned that a dear sweet friend had passed away, she lived in the US and we met on our yoga teacher training which was over 21 years ago and was the same age as me. My heart aches for her, her husband and two boys, she had been ill for almost three years and I began to know something was not right when recently she’d stopped replying to my messages, when her husband’s message came through, I was stunned, another reminder that life is precious and just too short.
At the same time I’ve been receiving emails from students who I’ve reached out to, they’ve been sharing their life circumstances with me about how life is just so full on they don’t have time for themselves. Why is taking care of our needs first, so hard? Why do we push ourselves further down the pecking order? I hear “when things quieten down, I’ll find time for me” . The irony is, when we make those choices, we actually lessen our ability to support others and we sacrifice our wellbeing too, leading to burn out and other illnesses. What we are saying to ourselves is “I'm not good enough or important enough”. It’s an unspoken dialogue with our nervous system that is loud and clear on “pushing through”. But I do understand when we are being pulled in all directions, prioritising our needs can be easier said than done.
Taking time to practise somatics is an unspoken dialogue with our nervous system that brings you back into a calmer, clearer and more comfortable way of being and living, helping you to navigate life’s challenges. It’s never too late to begin prioritising your needs but I know how my hour long classes might feel too much when time is tight, so I’m now committing to recording more shorter classes - there’s a few already in my Short n Sweet library and in this course that I recorded some years back. When you have more time (pre-bed is my preferred practice time) taking a longer practise is the perfect antidote for a busy mind and an aching body and I have a lot of options in my Zoom library, these are all available through my On-Demand membership - all those details are here and I’m here to support giving you space to off loading the tensions that life brings.
Do take care of you and tell those you hold dear you love them...
