Thomas Hanna
It’s a very windy September day here Lincolnshire!
I don’t know about you but the wind makes me feel all kerfuffled and discombobulated?!
I know from an energetic/spiritual view the wind is all about change, moving things through, cleansing, renewal and freedom. From an Ayurveda perspective it relates to vata dosha (dosha meaning your constitution) to our skin and thus plays a role in our sense of touch. So wind, it’s energy and spirit goes hand in hand with Somatics, helping us, through our senses and movement to shift stuck patterns, renewing our energy and neural pathways, creating positive change and freedom. Freedom was something that Thomas Hanna was passionate about.
““ What I seek to encourage in other human beings is a growing self competence, so that they can become freer ” ”
“ All my life I have been profoundly concerned with being free. I have always understood that to be free does not merely mean to be without external hindrances. Rather, the prime requisite for being free is to have the internal power and the internal skills, judgment, perception, and intelligence in order to be autonomous, because freedom is essentially self-responsibility and independence … You can’t be independent unless you can stand on your own two feet, and it’s not a matter of just rebelliously standing on your own two feet, but of knowing who you are, knowing your powers, and being able to be creative and productive on your own …”
Extract from an interview by Helmut Milz M.D.
When I began to read Thom’s book, his work and philosophies, it was if the stars had aligned. His understanding of the reflexes, the movements and technique were the “things” I’d been searching for to feel more comfortable and at ease in my own soma. I have enquiries from clients telling me how their lives have become smaller, stopped in their tracks because of how pain has limited their movements. I also see this amongst my community and I’m not just referring to the elderly! 😱. It really doesn't have to be this way and it’s certainly not inevitable.
If you have time, do read the full interview to get to know more about Thomas Hanna, his background and his passion for freedom.
My weekly classes are back on the timetable and my upcoming offerings can be found here .
From my Heart, Soul & Soma to yours, I hope to see you soon.
